Feather Art
Rather than just using paper or canvas, sometimes I like to paint on real bird feathers. I love the challenge of painting a miniature to suit the size and shape of the feather.
The smallest feathers that I currently work on are the primary wing feathers that Loki, my Senegal parrot, is kind enough to moult out. They’re only 2cm wide so the pictures that I paint on them are very tiny. When I use larger feathers such as swan feathers, I can make the painting look a lot more realistic and detailed.
The feathers look very nice when they are fixed to some textured paper (they can be sewn to the paper or stuck using double sided sticky tape but sewing is better because the feather is not permanently stuck to the paper) and then framed.
A single feather can be framed or I can paint a little series, for example of goldfinches on teasel that covers three feathers, and all three feathers can be framed together.
I can paint on lots of different types of feather as long as they're big enough and aren't fluffy. I'm happy to paint on feathers supplied by the customer, obviously as long as they're not from diseased birds.

I can paint any sort of animal or plant onto a feather. I can even paint a miniature landscape if you wish but that would only really suit larger feather sizes. Prices for a painted feather start at £8 for something simple like a single bluetit on a senegal feather. The same thing on a large feather would be in the region of £12 - £20 (depending on the size of the feather). For another animal on the feather it would add another £4 to £10 to the price. You can see some of the different types of feather available on some websites such as ebay.
I can send feathers to anywhere in the UK and Europe. I like to use recorded delivery for my art so postage prices would start at £3. I always charge what I'll have to pay for the postage, no more.
If you think that you might be interested in commissioning a feather painting then please contact me and let me know what sort of thing you might be interested in and I can work out a quote for you. My email: [email protected]
